OUR VOLUNTEERS WISHES MATTER HERE Our deepest appreciation goes out to the 20,000 men and women across the country who give so freely of their time and talents so that a wish can work wonders for a child with a life-threatening illness. Their collaboration, commitment and compassion make all the difference to Children’s Wish and the thousands of wish kids and families we serve. Presenting Our 2016 Laura Cole National Volunteer Award Recipient Betty Hebb has been a member of the Children’s Wish family from the very beginning. Thirty-two years ago, her heart went out to children with life‑threatening illnesses, and since then she has dedicated herself – and some 35,000 hours of her time – to helping to make their wishes come true. In her capacity as volunteer and Coordinator of the Annapolis Valley West Subchapter, she has thrown herself into 600 events, raising $500,000 to grant 90 wishes for “her kids.” For many years, Betty has run Farmer’s Family Diner in Aylesford, NS, as the unofficial hub of Children’s Wish. The walls are lined with photos of wish children, volunteers and event participants who have warmed the seats there, and the diner is often used for subchapter meetings and fundraisers. Sit down for breakfast with Betty or tuck into one of her homemade pies, and she will share stories of the many children who have inspired her work over the years. Many still drop by for a warm meal and an even warmer hello. It is typical of Betty’s self-effacing style that she is quick to share this honour with her team of Children’s Wish volunteers, including her long‑time friend, Millie Clements. As Betty says, “It means so very much that…our whole community is being recognized for our hard work and dedication to Children’s Wish.” Everyone at Children’s Wish thanks Betty for epitomizing the true spirit of volunteerism. We send her our heartiest congratulations on her well-deserved award. “It means so very much that…our whole community is being recognized for our hard work and dedication to Children’s Wish.” -Betty Hebb 24
