For 32 years, we have witnessed the profound impact of wishes on the lives of children with life-threatening illnesses. We’ve always known that wishes matter. Now, as we approach our 25,000th wish milestone, we have gained a deeper understanding of the important ways in which wishes help. A growing body of research substantiates the value of programs like ours in treating seriously ill patients. This was confirmed by an independent impact study we commissioned last summer, which identified four areas of measurable – and lasting – benefits of wish granting. Wishes were shown to have a positive effect on treatment and healing by reducing the perception of pain through difficult treatments, promoting family bonding and closeness, and giving children much-needed support for their mental and emotional well-being. Importantly, these positive effects continue long past the wish experience itself. The healing power of a wish is widely recognized by the medical community, at whose urging we broadened the range of young people we help. The Children’s Wish family now includes children with serious genetic or neurological conditions, a cohort that accounted for nearly 10% of wishes granted last year. These are challenging times for any charitable organization. Competition for share of heart (and wallet) is greater than ever. With increased referrals from healthcare professionals comes increased pressure on revenues and resources. The more wishes matter, the more money matters. Coming off a record year – Children’s Wish granted a remarkable 1,195 wishes in 2015-2016, the most ever in a single year – we sharpened our focus on fundraising, strengthening the foundation for more wishes-to-come. The need to keep pace with rising demand in a turbulent economic environment has propelled us to seek innovative ways to expand and engage our community of givers. We look forward to meeting the challenges of the year ahead with a renewed sense of purpose, inspired and informed by compelling evidence. It is a purpose we could not fulfill without the confidence of our healthcare partners, the dedication of our volunteers, the talents of our wish- granting teams and the generous support of our donors. Truly, you are the power behind the power of a wish, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO AND NATIONAL BOARD CHAIR Over the past year, Children’s Wish hosted 845 events in hundreds of communities across the country, cultivating grass-roots connections with new and current donors. Fundraising activities during Children’s Wish Month in March raised our profile within the Canadian charity landscape, as well as donations for future wishes. We’re pleased to note that, in its second year, our More Wishes, More Wonders major giving campaign has already hit the halfway mark of its $10 million goal.
