Four years ago, Kyla Martin, Provincial Director of Children’s Wish Alberta & Northwest Territories Chapter, was introduced to Norm Meldrum of World Financial Group (WFG). Soon after that meeting, WFG became the presenting sponsor for the Children’s Wish Poker Tournament in Calgary. Norm has chaired the Poker Tournament ever since. Under his watch, the event has grown in both popularity and proceeds, culminating in this year’s sold-out affair, which raised $149,545 – with donations still coming in. Over the last four years, the Poker Tournament has raised an impressive $360,000. His contributions have been just as effective behind the scenes, attracting dynamic committee members Heather Whittaker, wish mom Jody Castle and new recruit, John Mayberry (CIR Realtors), who was responsible for filling 100 seats at the 2017 event. Norm also brought on Calgary Stampeders’ defensive coordinator DeVone Claybrooks as a Celebrity Ambassador. Norm’s dedication is evident 24/7. Suggestions to enjoy some hard-earned time off are met with a picture of a wish child and the explanation, “This is why we do it.” So it came as no surprise when, moments after the 2017 Poker Tournament ended, Norm set his sights on 2018 with the promise, “We’re going to make it bigger than ever.” The Champion Behind the Poker Tournament Alberta & Northwest Territories Chapter “We’re going to make it bigger than ever.” - Norm Meldrum 6
