Wish Child Shane with Olympic Ski Cross Racer Brady Leman

Shaw Charity Classic, Aug 5-9 to benefit youth in AB

Wish Child Shane, 13, Olympic Ski Cross Racer Brady Leman and CWF Alberta Chapter Director Kyla Martin hit the green together at the Shaw Charity Classic Celebrity Shootout to promote the upcoming Shaw Charity Classic, happening August 5 – 9, 2015 at Canyon Meadows Golf Course in Calgary. Last year, Children’s Wish was able to grant 15 wishes as a direct result of participation in the event.

This year, Children’s Wish is also included in Birdies for Kids, a new fundraising initiative presented by AltaLink.  Corporations and individual donors can make a one-time or per-birdie donation to the charity of their choice at any time.  These donations are further leveraged through a tiered matching program in which a percentage of the first $250,000 donated will be donated to each charity.  Last year, Champions Tour players racked up 892 birdies!

“Birdies for Kids gives all Albertans the opportunity to participate in our charitable programs, and allows the Shaw Charity Classic to impact youth in every corner of the province,” said Clay Riddell, tournament chair.

While many charities will benefit from the Shaw Charity Classic, Children’s Wish Alberta & NWT Chapter is privileged to be one of just six official charitable partners to share in $1 million earmarked for youth-based charities in Southern Alberta.

Jaxen's Story

At 15 months of age, Jaxen took sick and was rushed to hospital on life support where his family sadly discovered that a virus had attacked his heart. He was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy and he and his family moved to Toronto to await a transplant. After 10 very long months, Jaxen received his new heart and thankfully today, he is doing quite well. His mom had heard about Children’s Wish from friends and when we told her he was to receive a wish, she told us “…after spending so much time in the hospital and having to do so many nasty things that he don’t want to do, it’s really cool that Jaxen gets to do something he actually wants to do.” Jaxen told us that he wants to meet his favourite character, Diego at Disney, because he saves animals, so he and his three older siblings and parents are very much looking forward to seeing his wish come true. Coming from a large family, his mom Joy told us that, as parents, they try to do special individual outings with each of the children, to give them special one on one time together, so when we asked if Jaxen would like to attend Exile Island Moncton, she readily agreed. Jaxen was a big help at the fundraiser, handing out reward stones and cheering on the competitors, but it was the team of firefighters that he really took a shining to. Thank you to the brave team of firefighters for helping to grant Jaxen's Wish!

Conor and Family

2015 Shiver Ball

The 6th annual Shiver Ball Gala held on February 20th was a very special night for the Children’s Wish Foundation. 370 guests were in attendance helping us raised over $115,000 for the Foundation. The room was adorned with pictures of wish children and their families from the past 30 years. Guests were welcomed with passed hors d'oeuvre and sparkling wine, and later treated to a night of an exquisite dinner, followed by dancing and an exciting key prize draw for various prizes. The true star of the night was 5 year old Conor who, at the young age of 2, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Conor’s mom, Morgan spoke about Conor’s journey, his continuing treatment and what his wish meant to him and his family. This year’s dinner had even more significance as it was also a celebration of the Foundation’s 30th Anniversary. In 30 years, Children’s Wish has been able to grant over 20,000 wishes across the country, touching thousands of lives in the process. We would like to thank everyone who was a part of this exciting event and who generously supported the Foundation with their commitment of helping to grant wishes.

Exile Island Edmonton

Exile Island Edmonton

Sovereign General has been a Children’s Wish Corporate Donor partner for over 10 years, collectively raising over $200,000 to help grant wishes through their corporate partnership in many Children’s Wish events. For their Exile Island corporate team challenge, they wanted to get to know their wish child; Wish Child Matthew, who was invited to Sovereign General, Edmonton Office, for an introduction and to learn about his wish. “I don’t think anyone on the team was prepared for such an overwhelming journey,” team member Natalie said. Thirteen-year-old Wish Child Matthew was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 11-years-old and has faced many challenges in his life as a result of his illness. Matthew’s Wish is to meet the cast of The Walking Dead, and so the name of Sovereign General’s team was determined to be “Matthew’s Walkers”. A week before being “Exiled” at the West Edmonton Mall, “Matthew’s Walkers” regrouped at the Sovereign General office for lunch and some Nerf gun target shooting to prepare for any zombie pirates that they may run into the day of Exile Island. “We will all treasure that time with Matthew. The bonds made over Nerf bullets are never to be broke,” said Natalie. Through corporate donations, personal fundraising, 50/50 draws, and Bingo for Wishes, Sovereign General raised over $18,000 this past January to help grant Matthew’s wish. With the help of corporate partners like Sovereign General, wishes like Matthew’s Wish have come true, as well as so many others.

2015 WISH Gala

On Thursday, March 5th, 2015, 180 glamorous Vancouverites raised over $165,000 to support the work of The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada, at the 2nd annual WISH Gala, presented by Pacific Blue Cross. Held at Vancouver’s historic Vogue Theatre, the event was sold out months in advance. Guests gathered for an incredible meal prepared on stage by Edible Canada, plus canapés from Fable, and a sweet finish by Farm 2 Fork. Wish Child Avery, who was diagnosed with a herart condition and underwent two open-heart surgeries when she was nearly three-years-old, was the Co-Host of the evening. Wish Child Emily has lived with Chron's Disease most of her life, and after her wish was fulfilled, she began volunteering with Children's Wish. You can view Emily's story here, produced by Vancouver's Noravera Visuals. Emily's video was premiered at the WISH Gala. Okotoks Wishmaker Walk for Wishes

On October 4th, the community of Okotoks came together for another successful Wishmaker Walk! From bouncy castles, to live musical performances, the day was packed full of fun and entertainment for the whole family. The whole community rallied together to help raise funds for Children's Wish. Ten year old Rylee Ried shaved her head to help support wishes at the walk this year (raising over $2,100 herself!)

The Okotoks Wishmaker Walk raised over $50,000! Thank you to the committee for all of their hard work, and thank you to all of the supporters, volunteers, and families who worked hard to create another successful walk.

The Pirates of Exile Island

On September 19th, Exile Island proved itself to be fit for only the most rugged, courageous and resilient pirate crews of Calgary. Thirteen teams joined together as they dug for treasure, walked the plank, and battled the high seas with their hand-built pirate ships.

Thanks to the generosity and determination of the pirate crews, Exile Island Calgary raised a record breaking $335,000! Thank you to all of the participating teams, wish children, families and volunteers for the outstanding success!

Sam Sung auctions off last Apple business card

Sam Sung, a former Apple employee, generously auctioned off his last Apple business card, alongside an old uniform, to help grant wishes. Sam is a volunteer in the BC & Yukon Chapter of The Children’s Wish Foundation. He was introduced to Children’s Wish at the inaugural WISH gala in Vancouver, BC in March 2014. When the auction of his Apple items went live, it began generating a buzz on social media due to the irony of the items. After eliminating fake bids, the final bid was nearly $3,000 (CDN) and Sam was very pleased with the overall outcome. He continues to help support the magic of a wish!

Their generosity has made close to 90 wishes possible.
